Having become bored of continually having to close down the plethora of popups, pop unders, pop behinds and whatever that gets thrown out by way too many sites, the obvious solution was to prevent the browser ever reaching those sites to begin with.

There are plenty of firewalls available, free or otherwise, that provide a facility to limit access to named domains. There are also 'popup killers' that automatically close down the pages once they begin to open. There are even other free browsers, that prevent new windows being spawned without your express request.

All of these options, great though they undoubtedly are, generally involve time and/or money to get the best use out of them. I use all of them, but I wanted something that was easier and faster to update while surfing. Lo and behold, for virtually all systems, the hosts file.

Requests for resources (HTML pages, or images, etc.) are usually made using a domain name, such as www.a2zcomms.com for example. This domain name needs to be converted to a less human-friendly form, the IP address. The very first place that your browser looks to find this required conversion, before ever venturing outside your own PC, is the hosts file.

If you provide a 'false' IP address in that file for those sites that you know you will never want to visit, the browser can be redirected to a safe location. This means no unwanted content appearing in your browser. The safest redirection you can possibly provide is to the IP address 127.0.0.1. This address ALWAYS refers to the machine the browser is actually running on, i.e. YOUR PC. It doesn't get much safer than that. Firewalls and Internet Security Resources
